History of the town

The town of Tikhvin is the administrative center of the Tikhvin district in the Leningrad region that is situated 200 km east of St. Petersburg on picturesque banks of the Tikhvinka river. The town is a big industrial & cultural center and a transportation hub in Leningrad region.

Tikhvin is entered into the amount of 110 Russian historical cities.

Its name originates from combination of two words namely, «tikh» (road) and «vin» (water). The town is located on ancient commercial water ways.

The town must owe its creation and affluent & glorious historical events to the miraculous apparition of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God (the Theotokos of Tikhvin icon)occurred in summer 1383 that is considered as one of the most esteemed and worshipped icons in Russia. There is a legend about the appearance of the wonder-working icon of the Mother of God in the Sunday chronicle that was given the name Tikhvinskaya. Later at the place of her new appearance the monastery and the town were built. The greatest Orthodox relic is kept in the Tikhvin Bogorodichno-Uspensky monastery and is considered to be the precise spot that attracts pilgrims from every corner of the world.

This area also became famous for the battles of Tikhvin that went down in history of the Great Patriotic War. Tikhvin became the first town in the USSR to be liberated from fascists. To revere the memory of fallen heroes, some events that are devoted to the 70-anniversary of Tikhvin liberation from Nazi invaders will take place in 2011. Lately Tikhvin was awarded the title of honor «Cities of War Glory».
